Water Quality Monitoring Report – August 2025

Quarterly Water Quality Report – August 2025

Opuha Water Ltd publishes its quarterly water quality reports for Lake Opuha and the wider scheme catchment to share with the community the results of our extensive water quality monitoring program.

The August 2025 water quality report focuses on updating stakeholders and the community of the work that OWL is undertaking and planning in the Lake Opuha catchment to understand the sediment and nutrient sources entering the lake.

Key points:

  • OWL has established water quality monitoring programs in Lake Opuha, its main tributaries (North and South Opuha), and smaller tributaries (Ribbonwood, Station, Deep Creeks, and Clayton Stream).
  • Since June 2024, OWL has installed continuous turbidity sensors in the North and South Opuha Rivers.  OWL is also planning to place portable sensors in the smaller streams to quantify their sediment contributions.
  • Monthly sampling shows some streams (Ribbonwood, Station, Clayton) have higher nutrient concentrations, especially during rain.  OWL will use a mix of monthly spot sampling, higher frequency sampling, targeted event sampling and potentially passive sampling to better understand the nutrient loading.
